The crime of bombardment of the Ziwa camp – 1985

Ziwa camp was established following the 1975 Algiers Agreement between Saddam Hussein and the Shah of Iran, facilitated by Abdul Rahman Boumediene. It was part of a conspiracy planned by the USA and Russia to end the September Kurdistan revolution. This led thousands of Kurds from Southern Kurdistan in Iraq to flee to Iran, becoming political refugees due to the oppression and tyranny of the Iraqi government during the Ba’ath regime. The camp, located near the village of Ziwa in the Margavar rural district of the Silvana region, Urmia County in West Azerbaijan Province, Iran, in Eastern Kurdistan, housed many families, children, and relatives of Peshmerga fighters from the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iraq (KDP).
During the Iraq-Iran war between 1980 and 1988, the Ziwa camp was targeted and bombed nine times. According to the United Nations Convention on the Protection of Refugees, the life and dignity of refugees must be protected. The Ba’ath regime of Iraq, as a perennial practice, committed severe crimes against the women and children in the refugee camp.
On the morning of June 9, 1985, at 9:15 AM, eight Baghdad regime warplanes attacked the Ziwa camp, heavily bombing a camp filled with civilian women and children.”

“As witnesses stated, most students were going to school to receive their final exam results when the sound of airplanes engulfed the entire area, and everyone was fleeing with no opportunity to hide.
As a result of these bombings, 150 people, including several pregnant women and infants, were massacred in front of the international community, and 373 others, including women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, were severely injured. The bodies of the victims were buried in the local cemetery, and the injured still suffer from their wounds, never forgetting the memory of this great crime and that bitter day.
This brutal crime never reached any court, and the relatives of the victims recounted their stories in their presence or interviews, but justice was never served for them.
This crime falls under the category of genocide, aimed at the destruction of innocent people, as well as war crimes, as it occurred during the Iraq-Iran war and constitutes crimes against humanity due to the brutal targeting of innocent civilians.”
